Yesterday during my lesson my teacher stopped me and began describing how to feel/play vibrato on the piano. For about 5 minutes she was showing me different ways to play a note based on where your finger contacts the key. She asked me to try the different "methods" and see if I could feel what she was talking about. She ended up mentioning how this would be most easily noticed when playing in large halls and that the piano tone (color) could be changed with these methods.

The problem I told her is that unless I have an acoustic piano at home (I don't) there's no way to practice these things.

Any of y'all had similar techniques taught to you?

Yes and no. I believe there are five different ways to strike a chord depending how you want it to sound. But, I think it's pretty obvious to say, it's impossible to control the volume or tone of a note once you've struck it - so that eliminates the possibility of any "vibrato" in the violin sense.

Unfortunately I think you're right with not having an acoustic piano. Digital pianos can emulate the feel of a real piano but none can match the action of real hammers and strings.
