You will be 10 years older, ten years from now, no matter what you do - so go for it!

Lee,
I'll put you at the top. I put a + after 69 as my birth day is 9/14/35. Sounds like yours is sooner than September. Hope you are enjoying your lessons. Have you ever played before?

Chuck, I guess you're right. I move out of the 60's on 4/14. (However, I treat that date on my birth certificate as just a number on a piece of paper). I tried self-teaching for a few months but do not have the self-discipline to practice. Also, I find that I was always afraid of developing bad habits. I am thrilled that my daughter got me started with lessons with a gift certificate for lessons at Christmas.

Lee,
I have had seven lessons now, and go for my 8th tomorrow. I did some self teaching before starting my lessons, but knew I was getting bad habits. I also wanted to learn the proper fingering. That is why I started taking lessons. So far I have learned all the Sharp scales and the "f" scale in the circle of 5ths. I have also learned the Tonic, Sub Dominate, Dominate, and Dominate Seventh of all the scales. My teacher also has me doing various short songs to learn different methods of playing. I don't know if I am slow normal or fast student. I will just keep plugging along. I try and practice 1 to 1 1 /2 hours a day. There are some days that I do not get to practice. Since my wife and I travel when we can, I will not be able to take lessons or practice for about 3 months out of the year. I am looking for a 3 0r 4 octive keyboard to take in my suitcase so I can practice on trips.

I wish you luck in your indevers.

awong,

Thanks for your thoughts. The last time I was in Hong Kong was the fall of 1956 on the USS Lexington CVA16. I really enjoyed visiting your city. I bet it has really changed since than.

I want to register a formal complaint with the Powers That Be.

Dear PTB: I previously posted my age and was not added to the list. Although I do not live in California, this has affected my self-esteem. I am now seeking therapy and will bill you accordingly.

I may give you one more chance. I will repost the list and include myself. I'll be watching....

Seriously, thanks to Cindy and MarkB for email advice on finding a local teacher for a rank beginner. I have now taken two lessons and am finding the whole experience exhilarating and nervewracking, over-the-top rewarding and incredibly frustrating. Which of these applies depends on my success in plowing through a finger exercise or two fairly well or angsting over my continuing failure to be able to memorize the notes on the bass clef. I'm okay with [most] treble clef notes because I played clarinet as a kid and they've pretty much come back to me, but when I look at the staff in the bass and say, "Okay, the note in the first space is...?", and draw a blank, it's really annoying. "Don't worry about it," my teacher says. "It will come." I'm sure she's right, but in the meantime I feel awfully inept.

Cscott, how are you faring? You're about two months ahead of me.

And now the list (I'm No. 3).

awong, thank you for the welcome; I agree, it is never too late to learn (although it may be too late to ever get to be very good). However, I am enjoying the ride. I may be learning the basics but I am sitting at the piano making music - and I find that enjoyable.

Chuck, I will have my fourth lesson on Monday. It should have been last Monday but my teacher had to cancel. I should be starting on accidentals this week, then on to the G Major signature.

Baseball guy, I don't want to add to your need for therapy but respect your elders! (J/K) I think you followed the same procedure that the rest of us did by adding your name to the list, but you took my name off the top of the list. (You must have copied an earlier post because I just added mine on the previous page.
Good luck in your studies; I share your feelings.

Lee, my humblest apologies, and all veneration to you as No. 1 Elder. Where's that therapist's number?

Hi Baseball Avery,

Glad to see you're still here. I thought maybe Cindy scared you away. It's good to have another local person here. That way, we'll have stronger representation when we're deciding where to hold the first annual AB Forum Retreat.

I'm the only one who would have scared me away, and I came close. You should have seen me just before the teacher arrived for the first lesson.

The retreat...uh, will there be a mandatory recital? I think there's something important that just has to be done that weekend...unless maybe by then I'll actually have learned something.

Seems safe to add mine now, and I took the liberty of adding leebea back too.

I've had about 14 months of piano lessons, but have just stopped the lessons now.
