I realize that most of us hear are trying to learn piano, but I understand some of us have played other instruments as well. I began playing flute with my elementary school band from third grade to sixth grade. I even went one year to band camp, a total disaster(another story). I've thought about trying to learn guitar in addition to piano, but I've been reluctant because I don't want to take away any practice time from piano.

As a child in Hawaii, I used to enjoy playing the ukulele, but I don't even have one now - I may purchase one when I go back there next month. I also considered learning classical guitar, but like you, I'm reluctant to take time away from the piano. I tend to be interested in so many things but I've realized I need to scale back and be good at a few things, and not to be a "Jack of all trades". The uke is so easy though, so I don't see that as a threat to my time - it's just for fun anyway.

sleepingcats: Is the ukulele similar to a dulcimer(sp?)? My brother and I were visiting a music shop in Hampton Bays and the store owner was showing me how easy it was to play this very small odd shaped guitar looking thing. I wonder if they share the same key arrangement?

I was teaching myself to play the guitar but now as you guys say I need to spend most of my available practice time with piano. My acoustic/electric guitar was collecting dust so I sold it for some pocket cash, and later on when I have more time I will maybe just pick up a regular acoustic guitar again.

jdsher,

The ukulele is strummed like a guitar and there are several sizes depending on tone. I looked in my music encyclopedia for info on the dulcimer since I'm not familiar with it - it says it is played with wooden hammers, so they are definitely different!

I took up the French horn in the 5th grade and played in the school band all the way through high school graduation. After that, I didnít do much of anything musical except plunking on the piano from time to time. In my mid 30ís I discovered I can sing and have been singing unprofessionally (church, weddings, funerals) ever since. Iím hoping to become proficient enough at the piano to make my own accompaniment tracks so I donít have to depend on someone else to play or be limited to what accompaniment tracks are available commercially.

In the mean time, Iím having a blast learning!

I played cello for a few years starting in 5th grade. I gave it up because I got tired of schlepping the thing around.

Like most 3rd or 4th graders, I learned to play the recorder. Unlike most kids, I never stopped playing it, and I now have over a dozen ranging in size from a sopranino to a bass. I also have some Hall Crystal Flutes, but I haven't really learned to play them yet.

I really, really, really want a harpsichord. I just missed buying a used one by a few days earlier this year. Someday, I hope to build one.

Someday, I'd also like to get back to the cello.

Someday.

I started out with a clarinet. I took lessons for about 3 years. I also wanted to try the oboe. My clarinet teacher loaned me one of his, and said that I could try it out for a few weeks, then buy it if I decided to switch to the oboe. After a week of scaring the local wildlife, he got it back. All of my clarinet lessons were pretty much playing duets with the teacher, and that didn't work out at all.

Tuba and sousaphone in school band. Mostly because I was big enough to carry them.

For what its worth, I played trombone through high school and did so very successfully - 1st chair as a freshman! Then I decided I'd be a rock star, and took up bass guitar - so much more music theory presented itself with that, which was a lot of fun. Then life and the Marine Corps got in the way, and I only now find myself back into music (at age 40), having a go at the piano - still love the theory stuff, and feel I've got an advantage over other adult beginners who lack that background (not to mention bass clef, which apparently never left me from my trombone years). Its come in handy. But having said that, why can't I fumble my way through a simple "Anna Magdalena" Bach Minuet with someone watching w/out completely butchering it?

All part of the fun, I suppose! Cheers.

I played trumpet for years, but haven't picked it up since college. I actually have a degree in classical voice performance, as well as music ed., so I took "methods classes" in all of the families of the orchestra and had to study one from each family for a semester. My choices were french horn, flute, timpani & snare drum, and violin. I can't say I PLAY them, but I can play something ON them, if that makes sense.

Oh yeah, and piano.

Yikes, Rich, you're bringing back painful memories! wink My methods instruments were violin, trombone, bassoon and tuned mallet percussion (vibes was my favorite). I was absolutely horrible at bassoon, violin I was barely passable (though the instructor loved my teaching methods!), percussion was OK, but I could never get up to speed, and the trombone was my absolute best by far, even though I have relatively short arms and seventh position was definitely a s--t--r--e--t--c--h. Believe it or not, I ended up playing first chair (!) trombone in the ad hoc orchestra for secondaries, even though it wasn't my real secondary.

My Dad was a pretty good clarinet player and his brother played French horn in the Nashville Symphony Orchestra for several years.

My older brother played clarinet, older sister played flute & piano, and I played clarinet as well. (Not as well as most, but at least "also")
In high school I also picked up alto sax, then baritone sax in the school "swing band". Bari sax was probably my favorite, as it often followed the trombones down in the bass end of the music. Also filled in on occasion with Eb alto and Bb base clarinet.

No training at all with double reeds, strings or brass. Not too shabby on recorders, though. Have a good rendition of William Tell available. For a show stopper ... or heart stopper ...(certainly an offering stopper) I can put the soprano recorder in my (left) nostril and play several bars of "Ode to Joy" as a duet against the regularly orificed alto instrument. I can't begin to tell you how many times I've been requested to do this.... well, actually I can. It begins with the letter "Z". laugh

I tried the guitar as a child, but I just couldn't get past the soreness in my fingertips from the strings digging into the left hand. I also tried flute as an adult and lost interest. Currently, my wife plays flute and my younger son plays violin. We're putting some thought into what we can play as a trio.

Heck, I can do that with an ALTO recorder in my left nostril and a TENOR in the regular orifice.

Its a simple matter of personal preference.
As a general rule, I prefer sopranos and altos to tenors. laugh

I spent half of my life (at least) focusing on playing trombone and aspiring to a life in some great symphony....until I decided that wasn't the right road for my life (I'm now a missionary in Poland!). But along with the tbone, the baritone (euphonium), tuba, and sousaphone were all instruments that came pretty naturally. I also picked up the guitar about 5 years ago.

Having only played piano for 2 years in college (almost 10 yrs ago) and now back with it for only a few weeks, I know how much the other instruments (not to mention music degree) help with understanding and trying to produce "music" on the piano!

Continue to play the classical guitar a bit. It is quiet and more intimate. I pick it up after a bad day.
Still using a digital piano and looking for a piano that won't be too loud for the condo. Prefer a grand, but uprights are easier to muffle.

I've taken some lessons on drums, baritone, trumpet, guitar, cello and clarinet, none of which I'm very fond of. The only two I'd continue to play are the guitar and cello.

I have recently taken up the harmonica. I like it because it's soooo portable I can play it just about anywhere and it sounds cool. I don't think it takes away from my piano time as I'm usually playing it outside. So now I have a $25 harmonica to go with my $8K piano!

Played alto sax for years, clarinet for a year, French horn for about three years, and blues harmonica whenever. Always had a great deal of difficulty playing any string instrument, because my brain is wired for piano fingering since I started playing piano at five. Also , I could never really flex my fingers enough to get comfortable on the fretboard. Wish I could play violin. Also wish I played sax enough now to keep my embouchure in shape.

Played a flute has a child.
Playing an arranger type keyboard for the past 10 years and loving it with all the new keyboards that keep coming out,the sounds are getting better all the time and they are great to just sing along.
Been playing the piano the last 3 years and taking lessons.

I started playing piano when I was 11 (late, had to study a lot!). I started playing the flute when I was 13 (I have a pretty good tone, but lousy technique). I began playing the cello when I was 18, played it for two years, stopped for 7 years because of the need for more piano study in the conservatory, and I continued cello playing since then. I'm now 29.

I absolutely prefer the cello above the piano, but I play the piano quite well and my cello-play sucks. Murphy's law........

If you play mistakes, OK
If your technique is not perfect, we can live with that
But if you play boring,
I'll chop off your fingers and feed them to the dogs

CL,

Do you know anything about these new cellos I see (on eBay, mostly)? They are not as thick as a regular cello, but the ads say they sound just as good.

I am very skeptical! I also think most or all of them are made in China. I'd be very reluctant to buy something like that off the internet.

I'm just curious.

I have played guitar for a while.. but not in a while.. but I would learn to play

cello
saxophone
organ (Hammond B3)
mandolin
a host of tribal instruments from around the globe

There you have it.. justification for why I really should be a rich person and relieved of the burden of making a living.. I hope you all can join me!

I played the trumpet from 5th grade thru college.
I learned to play the E-flat tuba in high-school, and played in a dixie-land band in college.

In college, I took basic piano, and really wanted to start playing it, but couldn't afford one. I had always wanted to play the piano since I was about five years old, but my parents couldn't afford one.

Finally, at the age of 47, I bought my first piano, an upright, and began taking piano lessons. Two years later I traded it in on a brand new Kawai RX-2 grand.

Now at the age of 52, I am finally considering stepping up to a premium class piano, (Steinway, Bechstein, August Foerster or other).

I guess the moral of the story is, better late than never!!!

If there is something you truly want to do in life, you should figure out a way to do it. Playing the piano is very rewarding, while at the same time very frustrating. It's much more difficult to play several notes at a time on 88 keys, then one note at a time on three valves!!

My first instrument was my voice (singing with my three sisters and mother), then piano about age 7 I think, French Horn in junior high school & high school (continuing on piano), then guitar in college (continuing on piano), in mid-twenties I took up harmonica because I thought it was cool at those beach parties in So. California (continuing on piano whenever I could), in mid-thirties took up the drums because my job required traveling and I could always practice with just my drumsticks (continuing on the piano whenever I found one to play). And now, having purchased (just a year ago) my beautiful Petrof, I'm *still* continuing on the piano. I realize now that I never really strayed too far away from my first love: Piano.

I play the euphonium. The story is, I was at a summer program which had a band. They didn't have any euphonium players and the director knew me so he got me to learn euphonium for the band.
It's an amazing easy little instrument to play, I was up to speed with the band in a matter of 1 or 2 weeks.
I also play a little trumpet, but it's much more physically demanding.
If I could choose to learn any other instrument it would be the oboe. Man, that instrument has a great sound.

Also play the guitar.

My sisters play the clarinet and sometimes I wish I also knew how to play, or at least play an orchestra instrument.

I would love to play the cello though. Wow - its sonorous sounds hit me when I first heard Elgar's concerto...

but Piano will always be my first love.

Classical guitar, flute. They sound really nice together by the way. At my wedding a classical guitarist and flutist played Pacabel's Canon. It was beautiful.

Cello. Clarinet. Trumpet. Of these the only one I feel I have any real modicum of ability with is the clarinet...

Guitar is hard. I gave it up after a few lessons. frown

I've played electric bass in rock/jazz/fusion bands for the last 10 years. I have played some latin percussion (though I have much to learn) and some classical guitar.

I used to play the banjo (clawhammer style), but it's been a while. Still love the music, though.

There are two kinds of dulcimer, the hammered dulcimer (one of which is seen next to gryphon, in his photo, above), and the mountain dulcimer (go here to see a mountain dulcimer).
Mountain dulcimers are not very much like ukuleles, although the basic design is similar, and hammered dulcimers share only the features of having strings and being made of wood (which might also be said of some tennis racquets).

I play the piano and violin . These are my specialised study. I play the viola and the cello also, and I'm afraid, rather clumsily on the guitar as well. I've tried handbells and chimes before...literally taught them in scholls for some time. And they are by far the most interesting instruments I've come across. I'm fasicinated by their sound.

I am definitely a flute player who can't wait to add the title "pianist". I played flute all through college and will probably continue teaching it for the rest of my life. My goal is to be able to accompany all my flute students on the piano.

I played the sax in pep band in high school and played the clarintet in the pit orchestra when they needed a third part. I once aspired to play them all, but flute is my first love.

For me,i am dreaming myself having another instrument such as Violin or harmonica.

I played flute in my school previously.Master some skill of the first flute and picolo.

However, first get my priority set correctly for my piano before any new instrument comes to my life!

darb, you've given me an idea - my husband plays classical guitar and I have two flutes sitting around somewhere. Perhaps I can get my two daughters to learn flute in addition to piano and they can all make marvelous music together!

We have the two flutes because I used to play it - in high school; I was much better on the piano than on the flute and since I only have time for working on one instrument now, the flutes are languishing.

pedal steel guitar here . had to learn how to use both hands , both knees and both feet in very exacting time. after that the piano is not that much of a challange. its just learning where the notes are and how to read the notes, after that its just a matter of target pratice

Currently, classical & flamenco guitar, & French horn (the horn less seriously, due to jaw pain problems) in addition to the piano. I used to play the clarinet at school, & can get a tune out of the flute too. I also tried the violin, which was a disaster frown

I've played guitar since age seven (I'm nearly 57 now). I have been in several rock, dance and wedding bands with the guitar. Of late I just play "fingerstyle", which is a little like George Winston on the guitar. I also played Fender Bass guitar in bands, and was first trombone in my high school and college orchestras.

I played piano for a few years as a teenager, and recently returned to piano, initially to give my hands a breather from the rsi of the guitar. I really love the sound of the piano, and the feeling of making music on the piano is very big and very rewarding.

Guitar. But just enough to do the "campfire singalong" kind of stuff. I love guitar because it's like an instant party. I can play and sing with a bunch of friends, and it's fun. Like playing duets on the piano.

Now solo piano is another story. That's scary, so I mostly play the piano for my own enjoyment.

I played clarinet all the way through high school, and I still play on occasion at my church.

For my thirtieth birthday, I decided I wanted to learn violin. After three years of lessons, I could play intermediate-level music, but I couldn't get happy with my tone, so I stopped trying.

My husband and I have an acoustic trio and I wanted to do something besides just sing. I play piano on a few tunes, but I'm really a better classical pianist than a popular one. We bought an electric bass (I know that's not acoustic, but we define such things very loosely) and I can thump along in a very basic way.

Now I'm taking piano lessons again, mostly playing classical pieces, because it's just easier for me, but trying to learn to improvise enough to play passable popular piano. It's like learning a new instrument!

I played the flute in the school band in from fifth grade 'til sophomore year in high school.

I have always wanted to play the guitar because you can throw it in the trunk of your car and entertain people and yourself wherever you may be. Also, it looks cool. wink I bought a guitar and tried to learn myself, but I need lessons. I think those are in order for 2005.

I played clarinet from age 7 until I graduated from high school. I played pretty well actually. I expected the same "success" with piano, boy have I been disappointed! However its a journey of love.

My old beloved clarinet is now mounted on the wall in our family room (to the right of the guitar, unfortunately in this photo-in the shadow)
