I'll talk about taking standard notation to your guitar fretboard. The guitar is a four octave instrument, if you have 24 frets, most have 21 to 22 frets so are a little shy of a true 4 octave instrument.

I don't get involved with where middle C is -- or should be. That said here is how I use standard notation on the guitar fretboard.

D||------|--E---|--F---|
A||------|--B---|--C---|My middle C
E||--F---|------|--G---|

There is a lot of note duplication on the fretboard, I think, this is why guitarist use patterns so much. Back to the point.

Ledger notes below the clef are on the 5th and 6th string (A & E string). Ledger notes above the clef are on the 1st string (little e string).

There are two plus octaves on the first 4 frets (all 6 strings) and the third octave can be found on the 1st string just go on up the neck. You can get part of the 4th octave if you need it by going on up the 1st string beyond the 12th fret.

So....... taking your standard notation to the guitar is a piece of cake. Your knowledge of LH chord work flows right into the fretboard, you just have to know where the notes are. Right at first I'd suggest you learn chords using chord patterns and worry with what individual notes after you get the basics down.

Sorry, maybe it isn't obvious to everyone but Muzimad is a spammer. First post, replying to a 14-year-old thread, and dropping a link to another site. Those are all red flags.

Spammers are getting more devious. (And April Fools' Day seems to be a popular time for spammers and scammers to try their luck, judging from what I saw in various media today, warning the public about them.)

Instead of starting new threads, they are resurrecting old ones with some slight similarity to what they want to sell. Genuine posters don't write their very first post by giving spurious advice with a link.

Be very wary of posts from new posters with "helpful" links......

As far as posting to a spanner's thread, I was not aware of it; maybe I should have read the post closer.

Reminds me of the lyrics of one of my original songs, "Google my name if you want to know who I am". The Lyrics of the chorus are, "Google my name, if you want to know who I am. Google my name, if you don't want a lot of spam! Google my name, and I'm sure you will agree... Google my name, if you want to know more about me".

On the other hand, I actually Googled my name, and some of what I found was scary. I didn't know there were so many other people with the same name... and they were not me.

I probably have too, I don't do CG anymore, and the forum can be a bit stuffy. But some good resources on the actual site.

The most confusing thing about learning the guitar fretboard is realizing that there are multiple places to play the SAME note!!

Not a big revelation here, but it's the same with all the stringed instruments, and most of the horns, too. In fact, pretty much all the instruments except piano - even the organ!

Have a look at Justin Guitar. Starts from square zero, very pedagogic, totally free of charge and very structured learning plan. Not strictly classical though. But Justin is a great teacher!
