Finally got around to some detailed listening - 1st the entire Recital and now in smaller groups - great job by all - I will only comment on those that for several reasons stood out for me and which I enjoyed the very most - within the first 15:

01. Lisztener - "Gone"

Nice job on a pretty piece and well coordinated with the slide show - very enjoyable combination.

02. dannylux / Mel - Glinka Nocturne in E flat

First time I ever heard this - exceptionally nice piece very well played (as usual).

05. Mr. super-hunky - *Magicland*

Nice "haunting" original composition - very promising creativity - good effort.

07. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Polskie drogi (Polish roads)

Beautiful piece - really enjoyed this - very well performed. Thanks for sharing this with us!

10. Knotty - Just Friends - Improvisation Etude (to do)

"Just Friends" is a good song - I could hear the melody in my mind so you weren't that far removed - tasty jazz feel - much appreciated!

15. Kawaigirl1 - Winter Walk

Great Nevue piece so very well played (as we've come to expect) - beautiful!

More to follow . . .

Regards, JF

From the next 15 . . .

17. Orez Eno - Comptine d'un autre ete: l'apres-midi

As well played as I've heard this now familiar piece - good job Orez.

23. Honnli / Steven - Suteki Da Ne / Isn't It Beautiful (Piano Collections)

Yes, it is beautiful - would like to try this one myself someday - very well played.

24. Casyopea - Radio Ballet

Really nice piece - liked this alot - thanks for choosing it!

25. epf - La Styrienne (Op 100, No. 14)

Good playing on this epf - sounds tricky - enjoyable listen.

28. Seaside_Lee - What A Wonderful World

Excellent performance of a delightful pop classic - working your magic with the Piano Magic!

More to come . . .

Regards, JF

Only this one for now. Hopefully, more later.

07. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Polskie drogi (Polish roads) - Andrzej Kurylewicz

Mati, it's quite understandable that you have "a great sentiment towards this melody". As a listener it didn't take long for this melody to sink into my soul. I can imagine walking along a Polish road and hearing this music played from a distance. My heart and step quicken to get nearer the source of such beauty. Finally, I am close to the house with an open window from which this soul-wrenching melody floods my senses. I want it played again as I catch my breath and listen more carefully. It touches me quite deeply. The player has a beautiful gift that he freely gives to anyone wanting it. Thank you, Mati, for this magnificent performance and heart-warming melody that I may now hear anytime I wish.

Very lovely - very well played.

Beautful combo - very nicely executed. Thanks for setting this up ad sharing with us,

Nice job on this delightful little Sonatina Paul!

38. jotur - Cathy Turner - Stone's Rag

59. Schubertian - Prelude #13 (F# Major)

Nice even thirds, and nice voicing. This is one of those wonderful (and scary) pieces where the notes themselves aren't the big problem. What you DO with them is the issue. We really could have had a sub-recital with just Chopin!

60. Babs - Prelude in B Minor (op28,no.6)

I have always loved how the piano can be used to simulate things like bells (which is why Debussy's Sunken Cathedral has always been a personal favorite. I hope this venturing into the classical side will become frequent.

61. Oxfords Gal - Clowns OP 39 No. 20

I find pieces like this are amusing and infectiously joyous ways to introduce people to some of the harmonies of 20th century music. Nicely done.

62. bluekeys - Sonata in C (K545)

This piece always brings back fond memories for me. This was my son's first foray into Mozart as well. It's such a good piece for introducing many of the basics of classical technique. Yes, it's a bit ambitious for someone on two years of experience, but what the heck. Enjoy the challenge. You certainly know what you need to work on.

63. Euan Morrison - Vesper (from Casino Royale)

This sort of music offers great opportunities for lyrical voicing and you rose to the challenge.

64. AdagioM/Michele - Vals No. 1 from Valses Poeticos

Not played much lately, huh. Could have fooled me. I have never played anything by Granados. Thanks.

Selections from the next group of 15 . . .

46. Manndrew - You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To

Interesting and well played bluesy/jazzy arrangement - slower than I'm used to hearing vocal versions of this great Cole Porter song - had a hard time picking out the original melody though, but I guess that's my lack of training or experience.

48. Undone – Jim - Theme from Etude Op. 10, No 3.

Jim - nice, even, controlled version of a not so easy arrangement - yes, it was I who submitted this piece in the last recital - good job!

52. Deep Elem (aka Buck) - A House Is Not A Home

Beautiful performance of a beautiful song - hope to be able to play songs like this like this some day myself.

54. Always Wanted to Play Piano - Ombre

Nice job on yet another Einaudi piece (do we need a separate Einaudi Recital like the Chopin Recital?) - "musicality" will come with time & practice.

57. DragonPianoPlayer - Allegro

Good playing on this nice little Haydn piece - would like to work on this one myself.

58. Ozor Mox - The Portrait

Excellent playing on another beautiful piece - enjoyed this a lot!

A selection or reviews. Hopefully more to come later:

01. Lisztener - "Gone"
Very well played. I like the feeling you put into the piece. You have a nice sense of how to let a song breathe. I would have liked a little more dramatic build up in a couple of spots, but that is just a personal preference. And next time no editing !! We're all friends here, and hearing people at your level make a mistake makes me feel just a little better wink

02. dannylux / Mel - Glinka Nocturne in E flat
I don't know this piece but I really admire your playing. Fantastic control. Those 3vs2 and 10vs6 seemed perfect to me.

05. Mr. super-hunky - *Magicland*
When I saw this was another original for your album I was prepared for another well played performance that sounded much like your other performances, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The signature MSH grace notes are there, and it has a very definite new age feel, but I think you did a great job creating something just different enough to be very nice to listen to, even for those of use familiar with you work. Great job.

08. Peyton - The Last Man Alive
Ok, a bit of shock when the singing started, but only because I wasn't expecting it in a piano recital. My first reaction was to not want to like it because I thought it should be a piano recital, not singing, but I really liked it. It reminded me of a lot of the singer/songwriter/folk vibe I used to be really into when I lived back east. I'm always so jealous of those that can sing, and then to sing and play at the same time, fantastic. Great piano accompaniment.

15. Kawaigirl1 - Winter Walk
I'm not a huge new age fan, but I am definitely a Kawaigirl1 fan ! Your playing is flawless and sounds so professional. If you put this up against the David Nevue recording I don't know if I could tell the difference. Just amazing.

28. Seaside_Lee - What A Wonderful World
Another classic Seaside performance. The smoothness with which you play I really find to be the thing that draws me in the most. The only downside, and it is a very nit picky thing, is the sound is much like other tunes you've done. Next recital lets see you really push yourself. You play so wonderfully now, I can't imagine how great it will be when you push through to the next level.

29. Copper - Here There and Everywhere
Great song. What a fantastic touch you have. Very nice rendition of this classic.

38. jotur - Cathy Turner - Stone's Rag
Wow, how fun is that !!! I'm really impressed how you said you played this, by working on a number of ways to play different sections and then just kind of combining them on the fly. That is a real talent. I always look forward to your pieces, you always provide a great contrast. I really look forward to someday being able to play with that kind of speed and variety on the fly. Well done !

56. rustyfingers - Sentimental Journey
What a great groove. Smooth, relaxed, just a perfect feel for this tune. You really created a perfect mood with this performance, very well done !

77. Theowne - Prelude to the "Tombeau de Couperin" Suite
Amazing. Your playing is just fantastic, on a level I will never see but am nonetheless inspired to strive for (and I don't even like classical music !)

Hello Monica K and Recital Team,

What a fantastic job you people have done creating this recital. It is such an inspiration to hear such talented people. Since I've only been pounding the ivories for a matter of months I cannot make to many comments other than fantastic, inspiring, entertaining, you get the picture...

Thank you!

A few reviews (of some first timers):

04. Ode2Joy - " Prelude in F minor BWV 881"
Congratulations on your first submittal! I really like the piece you chose and having just tackled my first Bach (something simpler) I can appreciate the work you must have put in to this.

10. Knotty - Just Friends - Improvisation Etude
Wow, and this is after only two years! It must be great fun playing with a backing of bass and drums, it sure sounded like fun. Please give us more!

11. Benny - Comptine d'un autre été: l'après-midi
You really put a lot of expression into your playing of thie piece. You and Knotty give me hope by showing what can be accomplished in only two years. Great job.

12. ohitpro - Morning Snowfall
The “approaching cold season” is here where I live now! This selection sounds like the “kinder and genterler” side of winter (no major storm). Congratulattions on taking that big step and submitting your first recital piece. Nicely played!

16. flyingfroggy - Prelude in C# minor Op. 3 No. 2
Fantastic! I love the mood and feel of this selection. And you know, I think the “dinky little microphone” added to the ambiance of this recording; it gave it sort of a “large hall”, or perhaps an “old recording” sound that went well with this piece.

18. glitzer - Petite valse from Kinderalbum
We seem to have a plethera of first time recital participants that have been playing for two years. And they all sound wonderful. (I only wish a few more “early beginners” would join in the fun.) You wrote that “Obviously, this recording wouldn't be fit for public display in any other setting, but it's called the adult BEGINNER's forum, so here I am.”; well I can’t see how you could have any better with it. It sounded perfect to me.

26. Diane Cornellier - Minuet in G
Now that’s what I’m talking about. Well sort of; I’d qualify having been playing for only six months as an “early beginner”, but you wouldn’t know it from listening to you play. You did a fantastic job on this piece and while it has been voted one of the most common “first ‘real’ pieces” learned by many, it’s far from being simple.

37. Ken S. - Chopin a minor waltz (posthumous)
Here’s a piece I have to add to my list of “things I’d like to learn to play someday”. This is no easy piece, but you did a great job on it. And to think; you played this piece, which was published “posthumously”, on a hundred year old piano that was built a mear fifty years after the piece’s publication. I think there’s some meaning in there somewhere, I’m just not sure what it may be.

One more at my snail's pace...

31. LaValse - Prelude Op 2 - Scriabin

LaValse, perhaps this Prelude was intended by the young Scriabin to be on the light or whimsical side, but when I hear your masterly soft touch I am captivated by your beautiful and elegant musicality. How fortunate that your intended piece was not ready for entry. Otherwise, I would have missed this pensive (to me) gem that reaches deep and brings both a smile and moisture to my face. Thank you.

Nope its perfect and I totally agree...I'm spinnin' wheels at the moment and getting ever more disatisfied with myself. I need to do something to push myself more and change things I'm kinda stuck in a rut. Thanks for pointing it out laugh

As I mentioned over there your performance made me feel like a hack. You've shot way past me in your ability to play how I want to play. Wish I could find a jazz piano teacher round here to be honest just someone to give me a push (laziness is my achilles heel)

thanks again

I have played though the whole list at least twice. Like other posters here, I am very hard pressed to make a meaningful comment on all 77 pieces, so I have picked just a subset somewhat at random, and stopped when my word supply ran out. smile

If your piece is not on my list, it's just a reflection of my arbitrary selection process. Nothing to do with the musicality or otherwise of your playing. In my playing through the list, nothing was so horrible that I felt the urge to skip it, and a lot of the pieces I played more than twice, without commenting on them. So here we go:

04. Ode2Joy - Prelude in F minor BWV 881
Sounds a lot like Bach to me. Good first-up effort.

07. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Polskie drogi (Polish roads)
Never heard this piece before, but you played it with nice feeling and clarity of tone. Good recording too.

12. ohitpro - Morning Snowfall
Well done on your first recital piece. Flowed nicely with good clear tone.

16. flyingfroggy - Prelude in C# minor Op. 3 No. 2
My all time favorite piece which I am working on at the moment. You nailed those fast descending triplets at the end of the agitato section much better than I can. Well done. I expect that with its wide dynamic range, this is a tough piece for the recording equipment.

25. epf - La Styrienne (Op 100, No. 14)
A bright and cheerful piece that I haven't heard before. It shows the importance of playing through mistakes as I, for one did not notice them.

26. Diane Cornellier - Minuet in G
Wow only 6 months experience?! And definitely sounds like Bach too.

28. Seaside_Lee - What A Wonderful World Great job -- as always. I liked your improvisations -- they didn't hide the main theme.

31. LaValse - Prelude Op 2
Sounds a simple piece, but played very musically. Would not be out of place in a piano bar.

33. LisztAddict - Gounod Ave Maria with Bach Prelude in C major from WTC book 1
I was thinking that this sounded really good -- a lot like Jacques Loussier, and kept waiting for the bass player and drummer to come in. Then I read your notes -- "but playing it with left hand alone is really something else smile ". If you really did play this with the left hand only, then you could use the right hand to play the drums, or with your ability, maybe even the bass smile

38. jotur - Cathy Turner - Stone's Rag
I don't know how you keep that rhythm going! Well done!

41. Pixie's friend - BWV Anh 131 (Notebook of Anna Magdalena Bach, n 32, untitled)
Well done, especially after only four months.

43. mahlzeit - After Watching A Sentimental Movie
Well done. Very slow and sentimental -- you captured the mood well.

44. Eighty8 - My One And Only Love
Loved this. Your 40 years of off-and-on experience shows. Nice rendition and swing.

48. Undone – Jim - Theme from Etude Op. 10, No 3.
I love this piece too, and have been working on the full version for the last three years -- still not sick of it. Well played.

52. Deep Elem (aka Buck) - A House Is Not A Home
Haunting melody, played with feeling

53. babama - Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, 18th variation (Rachmaninov, arrangement Pochacco)
Wow! fantastic. You get my "MP3 Player" award. And thanks for the link to the sheet music -- this piece is now on my "bucket list".

55. mlr1899 - Swipesy
I don't know how you ragtime players keep that rhythm going, but somehow you do! Good job!

56. rustyfingers - Sentimental Journey
Nice rhythm and variations.

57. DragonPianoPlayer - Allegro
Haven't heard this Haydn before, but it grew on me with a few playings. Nice even tempo, and played with clarity. Trills too -- that's a joy that still awaits me.

60. Babs - Prelude in B Minor (op28,no.6)
A beautifully mournful piece -- I enjoyed it.

64. AdagioM/Michele - Vals No. 1 from Valses Poeticos
Ethereal. Another piece that I don't remember having heard previously, but I enjoyed it.

65. Piano*Dad - Waltz in C-sharp minor Op. 64 no. 2
Loved this waltz, love Chopin. Wasn't so observant that I could detect the splice. Nice light touch.

66. ddh - Daniel - Wiegenliedchen 124.6 (Little lullaby)
Played with feeling and didn't sound bumpy to me.

69. Kawai, Hi - Dragon Fly
Sounded like a dragon fly too, flitting here and there. Well done!

70. Hisalone (Joel) - Bumble Boogie
Wow, a very busy piece. Don't know how you keep that rhythm going "I will try to make it faster" -- you mean it is not fast enough already? And the glissandos -- do you have any fingers left? Good effort.

73. IPIBAHN - Sandy - Tarantella - Prokofiev
"I only want positive feedback" -- Wonderful, wonderful! smile Having not heard this piece before, it sounded plenty fast enough to me. But as they say, keep practising and the speed will come. I didn't notice the missed notes either.

75. etorrales - Nocturn in Eb Major
One of my favorite nocturnes. A little slower than I'm used to, but played accurately, cleanly and with feeling.

And my "MP3 Player Award" as proposed by Orez Eno on page 7 of this thread is:
53. babama - Rhapsody on a theme of Paganini, 18th variation (Rachmaninov, arrangement Pochacco)

And my runner up "MP3 Player Award" is:
07. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Polskie drogi (Polish roads)

These awards are not on technical merit or anything like that. They are just the pieces I enjoyed the most, and reflect my own peculiar foibles as much as anything else.

And to all of us involved -- a big round of applause. laugh laugh laugh thumb

Okay, finally getting around to posting some comments.

BTW, thank you to all the comments made on my submission. It is all greatly appreciated. Many folks mentioned my ability to keep the tempo up. I will tell you right now that being able to keep it up took lots of time to build up the endurance. That it was noticed is very rewarding.

01. Lisztener - "Gone" thank you for a perfect kickoff to the largest recital ever. I'm still trying to figure out where I need to plug my ears. Great expression.

02. dannylux / Mel - Glinka Nocturne in E flat I must agree. Very romantic and you captured that throughout the whole piece. almost sends shivers. Great job.

03. AnthonyB - Stella Del Mattino Don't apologize for choosing one of the quarterly favorite composers. I can understand how keeping this consistent without any stops would take some time to get. You're hard work paid off.

04. Ode2Joy - Prelude in F minor BWV 881 Great first submission! Always like hearing some Bach submissions and yours was no exception. Niely performed.

05. Mr. super-hunky - *Magicland* Do I really need to give you a bigger head? laugh Nicely composed and performed. You're right though. This piece needs a BIG acoustic grand. Keep bringing us these originals.

06. jazzyprof - Etude op.25 #1 (Aeolian Harp) The Chopin etudes are always welcome no matter if you have submitted before. Since I did not hear the first one, I can't say one way or another, but I doubt this could have been worse than the first. Stunning performance.

07. Mateusz 'Mati' Papiernik - Polskie drogi (Polish roads) I always like hearing these kinds of pieces I have never heard before. Your performance was very entertaining. Thank you for sharing something so important to you.

08. Peyton - The Last Man Alive Great accompaniment to a great self-composed song. Very captivating performance.

09. Monica K. - Fairest Lord Jesus This is not like your previous submissions. A familiar tune with a bit of a new age arrangement. I like it and you absolutely nailed the performance.

10. Knotty - Just Friends - Improvisation Etude Gotta love that jazz improv. I felt I should be drinking a cocktail.

11. Benny - Comptine d'un autre été: l'après-midi Wow! excellent selection and even better performance. I have never heard this, but I think you made me a fan.

12. ohitpro - Morning Snowfall Nice calming piece that really captures the essence of the title. Great job on a first submission.

13. b528nf7 - Bill - Ol' Man River I still don't know why you do not perform professionally. I'm always thoroughly impressed with your submissions.

14. Riddler (Ed) - Rhapsody In Blue Yes, I too love this piece for what it is. My only problem is it always makes me think of United Airlines. laugh Great rendition of a wonderfully popular piece.

15. Kawaigirl1 - Winter Walk Impressive performance of a great composition. Captivating expression throughout.

More to come.....

Psa 33:1-3 ¶ Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright. Praise the LORD with harp: sing unto him with the psaltery and an instrument of ten strings. Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

Ya think God would permit 88 strings?

Thanks for all the comments on my submission. I’ve been a busy with school but after loading these songs onto my phone, it makes me feel so much more relaxed during school and when enduring the traffic while on the bus... I really hate the quarter system, it seems like theres a test every other week…
I’m going to try to comment on everyone’s performance.
01. Lisztener - "Gone" This is a beautiful song. I hope to be able to play as well as you after in about 3 years of playing. The playing is beautiful too, I didn’t notice any mistakes, but I’m not familiar with this song either.

02. dannylux / Mel - Glinka Nocturne in E flat I loved the quick part right around this middle. It sounds beautiful and flows together nicely. Your touch and precision are very nice, flowing from loud to soft sounds.

03. AnthonyB - Stella Del Mattino Love Einaudi’s music. It’s so relaxing. And wow, only 10 months. I’ve been playing longer, and don’t think I can even do half as well. This is a piece that I’m going to have to try to learn sometime in the future…

04. Ode2Joy - Prelude in F minor BWV 881 Well played, had a very even rhythm, not sure how the original sounds like though as I’m unfamiliar with the piece. I’m sure it get’s easier as you do more recitals, even if they’re online.

05. Mr. super-hunky - *Magicland* Composing beautiful songs in 4 ½ years, I’m hoping I can even compose a song in 40 years, let alone a beautiful song.

06. jazzyprof - Etude op.25 #1 (Aeolian Harp) Very convincing harp sound. Played beautifully. Can’t comment on your improvement from last time. But it sounds very hard to improve.

I'll do more later, now time to get back to studying.

Hi Lisztener,

I am overwhelmed by your feedback and thrilled that I can invoke in somebody else what these little Scriabin gems mean to me; thank you.

I love the way Michie Koyama plays it - her smile part way through never fails to make me smile in response...

Thank you, bruceee. smile And good luck with it yourself.

I got some critical feedback on another forum. Basicly that I'm too free with the rhythm and use too much rubato/ritenuto. I should save such 'slowdowns' for more specific moments and not apply them in every other measure (the triplets).
I agree that it could use a little less rubato, so I play it a bit different now than in the recital recording.

Preferred selections from the final 17 . . .

63. Euan Morrison - Vesper (from Casino Royale)

Very interesting & lovely piece - played with warm feeling and easy touch.

64. AdagioM/Michele - Vals No. 1 from Valses Poeticos

Very nice - love waltzes - would really like to hear the medley next time - thanks.

65. Piano*Dad - Waltz in C-sharp minor Op. 64 no. 2

Excellent playing of one of my favorite Chopin pieces.

33. LisztAddict - Gounod Ave Maria with Bach Prelude in C major from WTC book 1 - Thank you for selecting this beautiful piece for Recital 12. I often find an inspiring piece to begin learning when I listen to these Recitals and this one has found its "home". You played it beautifully and have the melody singing above Bach's Prelude in C Major. I am playing Bach's Prelude along with learning Gounod's Ave Maria. This recital had 5 Bach pieces and they all were highlights for me.
