Don't forget that rests in Chopin's & Liszt's era were not completely silent the way they are now. Pianos of that time had poor damping, and Chopin certainly never expected notes to die away so abruptly when the pedal was lifted (e.g. in his Ballade No.4 prior to the coda). ...
