It's Spring - What Have You Done for Your Piano Lately?

Here in the U.S. it's officially spring now. Of course it's a little hard to tell from where I'm sitting. I'm sitting in my office in Parsonsfield Maine typing this newsletter, and looking out at mounds of snow (and the wind-chill was five below zero this morning).
Still we're into the last week in March. This would be a good time to schedule your spring piano tuning. Proper maintenance of your piano should include getting it tuned twice a year. Your tuner-technician can also make sure the piano is clean inside, and that the action is properly regulated.
In many parts of the country we are coming into the damp season. Extremes in dampness (or dryness) can really be bad for your piano. You should try to maintain around 42% humidity for the piano. Proper humidity helps stabilize the tuning, and keep the action
(In fact not maintaining the proper balance of humidity could void you warranty.)

Want to Change the Way the Forums Look?

Did you know you can change the look of the forums anytime you want?
Look near the bottom of the page (on the main landing page). You should see the following: Privacy Statement - Board Rules - Mark all Read, then you should see a drop-down menu. Choose the style you would like to see/try from the drop down, wait a minute and the forums should change to look like the new style you chose.

Posting Pictures in the Forums

We are often asked how to post pictures in the forums. There is a Picture Gallery Forum specifically here to make this easier. First, please understand that we much prefer you upload a copy of your pictures to our servers using this gallery feature, or our older uploader, rather than just linking to them hosted elsewhere.
We constantly find that pictures linked from one of the free services on the web inevitably end up with broken links.

Our picture gallery tool automatically creates three size pictures. Thumb, Medium (best for display in a forum thread) and Full (full original size of the image you uploaded).
Essentially the steps are:
1.) Upload your pictures to the gallery 2.) Copy and paste the url for each picture where you want them in your post (each picture will have the correct syntax for embedding the picture in your thread).

Full instructions for using the gallery can be found here... Posting Pictures in the Forums

A Piano Party In Switzerland!
Sorry, you already missed it. Yes, I know. We didn't get an invite either :-(.
But it looks like the folks who did get together had a great time! Piano Party in Switzerland

You may have missed the party in Switzerland, but there is still a little time before the piano party in Lisbon this June! Lisbon, Portugal Piano Party Details

Kathy and I had a wonderful time at the Frank Glazer / James Parakilis concert with the Bates College Orchestra in Lewiston Maine (it was March 15th). Frank is a sprightly 99 year old pianist, James is a pianist, author (I have his book, Piano Roles) and professor.
We had the pleasure of sharing the concert with our friends Terry (longtime forums member TerryTunes) & her husband Steve who drove up from Massachusetts and stayed at our house. We met our friend and long time forums member Kathy K. after the concert and went back to her house, great time had by all!

Are You Taking Care of Your Piano?

Piano Need Tuning? Did you know your piano should be tuned at least twice a year?
As a piano tuner I sometimes receive calls from customers who tell me they aren't sure if their piano actually needs to be tuned. Let's think about this. Have you ever watched a violinist in an orchestra? They often tune up before every piece, and they only have four strings to contend with. The average piano has about 235 strings! And how do you make music on a piano? By whacking those strings with felt wrapped devices called hammers!
Yes, your piano needs to be tuned.

And it isn't just playing that knocks your piano out of tune, changes in temperature and humidity cause all those wood components of your piano to swell and shrink, helping to stretch and shrink the string lengths, contributing to driving the piano out of tune.
Yes, your piano needs to be tuned.
